Fall Workshop Descriptions

Fall Session I:  September 11 - October 21, 2017 (6 weeks) 

Fall Session II:  October 23 - December 1, 2017 (6 weeks)

Class Registration:  Please register at least one week in advance of the class/workshop start date.  Classes/workshops with low enrollment will be closed 3 - 5 business days before the first class.  

Cancellation Policy:  A refund is given to students who cancel 10 days or more prior to the class start date.  Students who cancel enrollment within 10 days of the first class will not receive a refund.  

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, registrants will be notified by email or phone within 24 – 48 hours of the first class. Registrants will be given the opportunity to transfer to another class or issued a refund.

An introduction to using the relatively new medium known as Alcohol Inks. Instruction will include demonstrations of easy-to-follow techniques to create vibrant, beautiful and interesting works of art.  Ample time will be provided for students to experiment and create on their own. We will work on Yupo paper, Ampersand Claybord, and ceramic tiles.  At the end of the workshop, students will have several pieces of original work to take home.  **Bring a bag lunch and a drink

This one-day workshop will introduce students to how to accurately draw the human figure with a sense of movement and life. Students will learn how to focus on the key aspects of the figure and grasp the elements of anatomy that is important to depicting dynamic figures in their work, with an emphasis on gesture, form, and anatomy.

Gain an understanding of how a master painting functions beyond just being an accurate representation of something.  Open to any skill level, as workshop concepts and exercises will challenge even advanced and experienced artists, students will practice the drawing fundamentals of line, value, and composition by working from paintings and drawings by master artists.  While working from projections of masterworks, students will study art appreciation as the instruction will discuss connections between artists that might seem very different.  Masterworks will include a range of art history: Piero, Fra Angelico, Titian, Tintoretto, Vermeer, Velazquez, Delacroix, Cezanne, Bonnard, Braque, Matisse, etc.

Learn and practice the basic techniques of encaustics, the art of painting with hot pigmented wax.  Discussions will include important safety information as well as how to set up an encaustic “studio” at home without spending a fortune. This is a beginner introductory workshop, perfect for the artist or crafter who is curious about encaustics.  All materials are provided, so no need to bring anything, but feel free to bring anything you might like to play with (especially objects that make interesting textures, rubber stamps and your favorite ink, colorful magazine pages, marks or drawings on paper, or other items you might like to incorporate).

This Encaustic workshop is designed for students who have some basic experience working with encaustics or who have taken the introductory workshop.  Learn the many different ways to incorporate images into encaustic painting, including image transfer of printed or copied images, use of magazine images for texture, color and content, and different ways to combine photographs and encaustic media.

Experience encaustic--the ancient art of painting with pigments dissolved in hot beeswax, the same process used by the Egyptians to make mummy portraits. Using modern materials and methods, learn about the beauty and versatility of this luminous medium: basic painting and fusing, incising lines and marks, creating texture and more. Regardless of your skill level, you will create several small, beautiful encaustic paintings to take home.

Weaving is an extraordinary and historic feat of human civilization. We encounter woven fabric everyday, yet easily take it for granted. In this class students will learn the basic fundamentals of weaving techniques such as hatching, supplemental weft, Rya knots and more on provided tapestry looms. This workshop will offer enough time to experiment with composition and inspire to finish a piece at home.  Each student is provided with a loom, one warp, weaving fiber, and a tapestry needle, and netting shuttle.

Learn the basics of wet & needle felting techniques within 1 day. At the end of the workshop, you will take home a beautiful wool painting which can be framed as wall art or a functional wool coaster. Felted pieces are durable, naturally anti-microbial, washable & stain-resistant. Class fee includes basic needle & wet felting supplies and about 100g of NZ wool roving & US wool batt.

Explore the creative process of marbling on paper.  The workshop will begin with traditional marbling techniques then progress to a more experimental approach to the medium including the introduction of alternative papers.  The workshop will conclude with ideas for crafting with unique marbled paper.  Papers will be furnished, but please bring any papers you would like to use (Masa paper, gray pastel paper and the colored Strathmore or Mi Tientes papers are preferred).

Learn to paint unique and charming portraits of your pet.  Working from photographs, this workshop will cover a range of techniques, putting it all together in a painting full of personality and charm. Work with acrylic paint to mix neutral hues that are ideal for animal features and fur, and practice painting expressive eyes with realistic warmth.  Learn to use loose, fluid brushstrokes for developing fur and whiskers and layer colors for a dimensional effect.  Students should have some experience with acrylics, but beyond that, all levels are welcome.

In this 2 day workshop students will learn to carve, ink, and print unique woodcut prints of their own design.  In the first day, students will learn about image creation appropriate for a woodblock, image transfer, carving basics, and tool safety.  Inking, proofing, re-carving and experimenting with color blend rolls and printing a small edition of prints will round out the second day.  Students should come with image ideas in mind or collected but all supplies will be provided.  Printmaking experience is not necessary but is welcome.

Level of Instruction: Beginner (Open to adults 18+ only)

$125 (price includes model fee + supplies)

Participants will build a figure in clay with a live model for reference. Instruction will be geared toward interpreting observations of general human proportion, gesture, and basic anatomy to capture the essence of the pose.  Students will sculpt in clay and will have an opportunity to have their pieces kiln fired.  Instruction will include different options for finishing sculptures, i.e. bronze casting; casting in resin, fiberglass or other materials; 3D scanning and 3D laser printing.
