Fall Session I:  September 10 - October 21

Fall Session II:  October 29 - December 8

Class Registration:  Please register at least one week in advance of the class/workshop start date.  Classes/workshops with low enrollment will be closed 3 - 5 business days before the first class.  

Cancellation Policy:  A refund is given to students who cancel 10 days or more prior to the class start date.  Students who cancel enrollment within 10 days of the first class will not receive a refund.  

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, registrants will be notified by email or phone within 24 – 48 hours of the first class. Registrants will be given the opportunity to transfer to another class or issued a refund.

Join Highlights magazine illustrator, Tim Davis in a survey course designed for talented students who are considering a professional illustration-related career.  Instruction includes composition for story-telling, character design, sequential art, creating portfolios, business tips, and an overview of digital illustration (Tim's primary medium). Weekly assignments will be given and critiqued.

In this class, kids (ages 7 - 11) will learn to improve drawing skills by sketching from nature.  Class will begin with creating a personalized sketchbook that can be used for capturing drawings anytime and anywhere.  Class projects will include sketching beautiful nature inspired centerpieces. Students will study simple line and contour sketches and learn how to compose the essence of a scene quickly.  Weather permitting, students will also sketch outdoors to learn value and composition with pen and ink and develop marking-making suitable for painting nature.

Learn how to draw amazing fantasy animals from literature and your own imagination! This six week class will focus on understanding shapes and the basic anatomy of your favorite animals and will creatively combine them using pencil and paper.  Students will explore drawing and shading techniques, learn about the importance of character and story, and exercise basic design methods while building a personal fantasy sketchbook, design portfolio, game, film- or book project.

Using a variety of materials (both 2D and 3D) students will explore color as an element of design. Students will learn about color theory, both technically through observation and intuitively through their own artistic investigation. Class lessons will include the study artwork from famous artists to understand how the lesson relates to color theory and a painting practice.

Wool can be transformed into a painterly image using a few simple felting techniques.  Learn how to blend and mix various shades of colorful corriedale wool fiber to achieve a beautiful wool painting.  Your wool painting can be framed in a shadow box or sewn onto any textile material. All basic felting materials and supplies are included in tuition. Optional: Bring a photo or 11x8 image printout from your smartphone/tablet.

Students of all ages and skill levels will learn how to sculpt colorful wool fiber into a needle felted cactus. A demonstration of needle felting techniques, shaping, layering fiber, blending colors, and an overview of felting tools will equip students to be able to turn roving into 3D objects. Workshop instruction will begin with felting a simple multi-colored pincushion to store felting needles, then move on to the more complex cactus project. Supplies will be provided and include several ounces of dyed wool roving, one small flower pot per student, felting needles, and foam felting pads. Students will have the opportunity to purchase additional felting supplies.

Intro to Needle Felting - Everything You Need to Know to Work with Wool

Learn how to work with colorful wool fiber in both 2D and 3D, and get a broad overview of the different types of fiber & tools used in this unique art form. A demonstration of needle felting techniques, shaping, layering fiber, blending colors, and an overview of felting tools will equip students to be able to turn roving into just about anything.  Begin by felting a set of colorful dryer balls, then move onto needle felting a pumpkin or 3D plant using wire armatures. Finally, needle felt a small design on flat wool and create a piece to be framed as hoop art. Supplies will be provided and include several ounces of dyed wool roving, one small flower pot per student, one embroidery hoop, felting needles, and foam felting pads. Fall for Greenville foodies will love to create a custom needle felt 2D wool painting in a 5” wooden hoop of food!  Create your favorite food, from cocktail shrimp or french fries to coffee, with colorful corriedale wool roving. All basic felting materials & supplies are included.  No experience necessary.

Learn needle felting and wet felting techniques to create a rooster painting with wool.  Step by step instruction will include how to blend, mix and needle felt with colorful corriedale wool fibers and merino/corriedale wool batt.  After adding fine details to the colorful rooster, you will also learn how to apply wet felting techniques to create a watercolor-like effect. All basic felting materials and supplies are included in tuition. Please bring an old bath/beach towel.

Explore the idea of what, exactly, a book is or can be. Be your own bookmaker as we design an accordian style and a self-portrait style using decorative papers, watercolor, and colored pencils. We will also experiment with the text-side of the book and see how best to put your message across! Be ready to be creative and to do a bit of writing. We will try to complete one to two books.
