Class Registration:  Please register at least one week in advance of the class/workshop start date.  Classes/workshops with low enrollment will be closed 3 - 5 business days before the first class.  

Cancellation Policy:  A refund is given to students who cancel 10 days or more prior to the class start date.  Students who cancel enrollment within 10 days of the first class will not receive a refund.  

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, registrants will be notified by email or phone within 24 – 48 hours of the first class. Registrants will be given the opportunity to transfer to another class or issued a refund.

The Drawing Marathon is an intensive workshop designed to immerse students in drawing with a focus on how to integrate drawing into studio practice.  The workshop will start with a source or jumping off point but participants will be encouraged to use projects to tackle art-making questions that they find particularly interesting. Participants will work on large drawings and be pushed to make changes and constantly adjust. The workshop is designed for students to be able to come, taking breaks as needed, so come for as much or as little drawing time as you choose.

Learn and practice the basic techniques of encaustic, the art of painting with hot pigmented wax.  Instruction will include important safety information as well as how to set up an encaustic studio at home without spending a fortune. This beginner introductory workshop is perfect for the artist or crafter who is curious about encaustics, or for a novice who needs a quick refresher course. All materials are provided, but feel free to bring anything you might like to play with, especially objects that make interesting textures, rubber stamps and your favorite ink, colorful magazine pages, marks or drawings on paper, or other items you might like to try to incorporate.

Push your encaustic practice further with this workshop in advanced techniques. Learn how to perform and control overfusing for dramatic effects, create your own encaustic blend suitable for sculpting and layering, make beautiful one-of-a-kind monoprints, and learn to blend encaustic with other painting and mixed media techniques. Many supplies provided, but students wishing to work with other art media should bring their own. Beginning course in encaustics or equivalent self-study required.

Wool can be transformed into a painterly image using a few simple felting techniques.  Learn how to blend and mix various shades of colorful corriedale wool fiber to achieve a beautiful wool painting.  Your wool painting can be framed in a shadow box or sewn onto any textile material. All basic felting materials and supplies are included in tuition. Optional: Bring a photo or 11x8 image printout from your smartphone/tablet.

Students of all ages and skill levels will learn how to sculpt colorful wool fiber into a needle felted cactus. A demonstration of needle felting techniques, shaping, layering fiber, blending colors, and an overview of felting tools will equip students to be able to turn roving into 3D objects. Workshop instruction will begin with felting a simple multi-colored pincushion to store felting needles, then move on to the more complex cactus project. Supplies will be provided and include several ounces of dyed wool roving, one small flower pot per student, felting needles, and foam felting pads. Students will have the opportunity to purchase additional felting supplies.

Learn how to work with colorful wool fiber in both 2D and 3D, and get a broad overview of the different types of fiber & tools used in this unique art form. A demonstration of needle felting techniques, shaping, layering fiber, blending colors, and an overview of felting tools will equip students to be able to turn roving into just about anything.  Begin by felting a set of colorful dryer balls, then move onto needle felting a pumpkin or 3D plant using wire armatures. Finally, needle felt a small design on flat wool and create a piece to be framed as hoop art. Learn needle felting and wet felting techniques to create a rooster painting with wool.  Step by step instruction will include how to blend, mix and needle felt with colorful corriedale wool fibers and merino/corriedale wool batt. After adding fine details to the colorful rooster, you will also learn how to apply wet felting techniques to create a watercolor-like effect. All basic felting materials and supplies are included in tuition. Please bring an old bath/beach towel.

An introduction to using the relatively new medium known as alcohol inks. Instruction will include demonstrations of easy-to-follow techniques to create vibrant, beautiful and interesting works of art.  Ample time will be provided for students to experiment and create on their own. We will work on Yupo paper, Ampersand Claybord, and ceramic tiles. At the end of the workshop, students will have several pieces of original work to take home. **Bring a bag lunch and a drink.

Explore how painted, stained and textured papers can be used to add dimension and color to your work and extend your individual boundaries.  Instruction will include a look at how acrylic paint, gesso and gel medium techniques can be utilized with paper collage. Participants will paint, stain and texture their own papers and then discover how they might incorporate them into a collage piece. Tissue and rice papers, gesso and gel will be provided. Artists of all skill levels are welcome to participate in this workshop.

Learn acrylic paint pouring techniques including the proper mixing of acrylic paints and additives to make colors flow into abstract designs.  Instruction will also include creating "cells" in layers of paint. Participants will work on four canvases in class while exploring paint pouring, pallette knife painting and swiping, and "flip cup" layering of colors.

Explore compositional design and aesthetics using found, printed imagery in paper collage.  Instruction will focus on building balanced and dynamic compositions using Gestalt principles of design.  Students will analyze subtle color temperature changes within a monochromatic scheme before developing a broader use of color. Conceptually, students will consider how subject matter is effected by deconstructing a single image or by reconstructing one from different sources, and how this process relates to artistic practices in other mediums.

Learn the basic principles of linocut printmaking while practicing French speaking skills. Students will learn the linocut process, from the creation of a drawing, to cutting, to inking and hand pulling a print on paper.  This workshop will be taught in French and will be designed for all levels of fluency, from beginner to fluent, as the instructor will switch from French to the English language. Participants will need to bring sketches, photographs or pictures for references and will leave the workshop with numbered and signed originals.

This workshop will serve as introduction to drawing from master paintings.  Discussion will include how to analyze composition and break down paintings into simple formal shapes to understand how the artist made decisions in making the painting. Emphasis will be placed on how those formal decisions give a painting its power beyond serving as a representational image of something.  Exercises will help students to see a painting as a set of relationships. A range of paintings from Renaissance to early Twentieth Century will be used as sources.

Draw the figure from observation in graphite while learning and practicing the visual tools of blocking-in.  Learn to organize a strategic method of thought and process to develop a clear approach to drawing. Spending time and focusing on block-ins is a traditional academic training method that allows one to fine tune foundational skills for high accuracy.  Students will work from the live model to develop comparative measuring and shape-seeing abilities along with patience, focus, accuracy, and observational detail. Beginner and experienced students are welcome.

This workshop details rapid foam sculpting techniques through lamination and reductive carving of layered foam board. Foam serves as a lightweight, easily manipulated material for building volumes quickly, and students will have the opportunity to work in low or high relief, and/or in the round.  Some experience working in 3D is preferred.

Create sculptural projects to better understand your paintings and advance your understanding of space in two dimensions. This course is open to painters working in any style and to most skill levels (students should have taken a painting class of some sort before taking this workshop).  This workshop will help painters to understand how a form exists in three-dimensions to make more informed decisions in painting. Participants will work from a painting of their own to execute sculptures both in relief and in the round before using those sculptures to start a new painting.

Learn to look and see the world in a photographic way. Participants will discuss underlying guidelines governing photographic seeing and picture-taking, and how to leverage these guidelines to forge a personal vision and a personal photographic style.  Begin by discussing three basic components of any good photograph, and move on to discuss the relative values of conventional narratives that connect specific events through space and time vs. artistic narratives in which images connect and communicate through the thread of a shared aesthetic. At the conclusion of the workshop, every participant will have gained clear take-aways that apply uniquely to them, and which they can use to build a richer and more satisfying photographic practice.
