Register now for SPRING 2018 One & two-day workshops

Spring Session:  April 16 - May 26, 2018 (6 weeks) 

Class Registration:  Please register at least one week in advance of the class/workshop start date.  Classes/workshops with low enrollment will be closed 3 - 5 business days before the first class.  

Cancellation Policy:  A refund is given to students who cancel 10 days or more prior to the class start date.  Students who cancel enrollment within 10 days of the first class will not receive a refund.  

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, registrants will be notified by email or phone within 24 – 48 hours of the first class. Registrants will be given the opportunity to transfer to another class or issued a refund.

Learn and practice the basic techniques of encaustics, the art of painting with hot pigmented wax.  Discussions will include important safety information as well as how to set up an encaustic “studio” at home without spending a fortune. This is a beginner introductory workshop, perfect for the artist or crafter who is curious about encaustics.  All materials are provided but feel free to bring anything you might like to play with (especially objects that make interesting textures, rubber stamps and your favorite ink, colorful magazine pages, marks or drawings on paper, or other items you might like to incorporate).

Learn to transform wool into an image of Van Gogh’s Starry Night using felting techniques. Fiber artist Cecilia Ho will demonstrate how to blend and mix various shades of colorful wool fibers to achieve a beautiful wool painting. Discover how a felting needle can replace a paintbrush to create a decorative work of art.  Your wool image can be framed or sewn into another textile material for display.  All basic felting materials and supplies are included.

The Introduction to Relief Printmaking workshop will introduce students to the processes, materials and methods used in relief printmaking on linoleum blocks.  Students will practice techniques for achieving different textures, creating a balanced composition, and designing a print image using easy cut linoleum while gaining an understanding of the materials and tools.  Students will learn how to pull a print, number a series, and have a finished block at the end of the workshop. (For the print subject matter, students should bring along their sketchbooks, printed pictures or drawings for reference)

2 Day Workshop

Instruction Level:  Open to all skill levels

Tuition:  $225 (price includes supplies)

Learn to apply texture to various surfaces by painting, staining, tearing, cutting, and compiling selected papers and images to collage.  Liquid acrylics and inks will be used to demonstrate staining/dyeing of tissue and rice papers and heavy body acrylics for painting papers.  Students will explore how gel medium techniques, gel skins, molding paste/gel, pumice or sand medium and even gesso can be utilized to create a variety of textured surfaces.  Students will also create their own papers and then explore how they might incorporate them into their pieces, utilizing drawing, painting, adding papers of personal interest and using gel textures.

This workshop will help students begin to learn how to make decisions when making a non-representational (abstract) work of art.  Workshop exercises will allow students to extrapolate from a variety of sources, and help take abstraction beyond an idea of style or just making sound design decisions.  Workshop content will be reinforced with relevant examples from art history.

Learn the unique watercolor painting style of Artisphere exhibiting artist ZL Feng.  Feng will demonstrate landscape techniques in watercolor including wet on wet, wet on dry and dry brush, and the steps to finish a painting using his methods. The artist will also be on hand to help you integrate his techniques in your own approach to watercolor painting.  The workshop will culminate in a critique of your work so please feel free to bring paintings you would like to discuss with Feng with you to the workshop.

Tuition:  $225 (price includes model fee)

Study the naturalistic and impressionistic techniques of painting first taught in turn of the century European studio schools and later brought to America by a select group of gifted painters known as 'the Boston School' or American impressionists. The techniques imparted are broad, direct, brilliant in color and immediate. This is the way of working espoused by John Singer Sargent, Edmund Tarbell, etc. and preserved and disseminated by R.H. Ives Gammell and his many students. Students will learn about these methods and philosophies as applied to portrait painting working from the live model. Teaching will proceed through demonstration, discussion and one on one critiques. Emphasis will be given to composition, doing a simple start, value unity, color relationships and an overview of American impressionism- with examples of it's practitioners. This workshop will focus on oil painting techniques, but acrylic painting or mass drawing in charcoal can be accommodated. All skill levels are welcome.

Gain experience in the tradition of self portraiture while increasing your confidence in drawing and painting from life.  This workshop will begin with a focus in drawing the portrait and will progress to painting in either oil or acrylic. Discussion will include using self portraiture as a visual way to express feelings and narrative. This workshop is best for beginners or intermediate skill levels, but all skill levels are welcome.

Explore a direct and immediate approach to landscape painting using a full palette and loaded brush.  Students will simplify the image by dividing it into relatable shapes, values and colors. Emphasis will be given to composition, making a start, the optimal use of the color palette, and paint application. Students can choose from a range of reference images provided or bring their own. Methods covered make for a great preliminary introduction for students who wish to work outdoors (en plein air) All skill levels are welcome.

Follow the footsteps of great photojournalists like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Vivian Maier and Mary Ellen Mark, and learn to capture random photographs of people, events and city scapes street photography.  This two day workshop will introduce students to the basic techniques of documentary style street photography.
