Class Registration:  Please register at least one week in advance of the class/workshop start date.  Classes/workshops with low enrollment will be closed 3 - 5 business days before the first class.  

Cancellation Policy:  A refund is given to students who cancel 10 days or more prior to the class start date.  Students who cancel enrollment within 10 days of the first class will not receive a refund.  

If a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, registrants will be notified by email or phone within 24 – 48 hours of the first class. Registrants will be given the opportunity to transfer to another class or issued a refund.

1 Day Workshop: Saturday, June 9, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Instruction Level: All skill levels, ages 7+

Tuition: $75 (price includes supplies)

Students of all skill levels ages 7 + will learn how to sculpt colorful wool fiber into a needle felted cactus. A demonstration of needle felting techniques, shaping, layering fiber, blending colors, and an overview of felting tools will equip students to be able to turn roving into 3D objects. The workshop will begin with felting a simple multi-colored pincushion to store felting needles, then move on to the more complex cactus project. Supplies will be provided and include several ounces of dyed wool roving, one small flower pot per student, felting needles, and a foam felting pad.  Students will have the opportunity to purchase additional felting supplies at the end of the class to take home if they wish.

Create a wool painting of the Falls Park Liberty Bridge using needle felting techniques. Fiber artist Cecilia Ho will guide students to blend, mix and needle felt with colorful NZ Corriedale wool fibers & US Merino/Corriedale wool batt. Instruction will include a step-by step wool painting demonstration and individual instruction. All basic felting materials and supplies are included.

Students of all skill levels ages 7+ will learn how to draw and paint with colorful wool fiber on a flat surface. A demonstration of needle felting techniques, layering, blending colors, and an overview of felting tools will equip students to be able to use roving to create pictures on fabric. The workshop will begin with felting simple shapes and lines onto test fabrics, then move to felting more complex designs like insects, birds, or flowers onto high quality wool sheet felt. Supplies will be provided and include several ounces of dyed wool roving, flat sheet felt, wooden embroidery hoops, felting needles, and foam felting pads. Students will have the opportunity to purchase additional felting supplies at the end of the class to take home if they wish.

Explore the idea of what, exactly, a book is or can be. Then be your own bookmaker as we create an accordion style and a self-portrait style using decorative papers, watercolor, colored pencil and other collage materials. We will also experiment with the text-side of the book and see how best to put your message across! Be ready to be creative and to do a bit of writing. We will try to complete one to two books.

Gain the skills and inspiration to cast jewelry or a small-scale object in sterling silver. Using the ancient technique of cuttlefish bone casting, students will learn to make molds into which molten metal will be poured. Within minutes after casting, the molds are opened and the metal objects are ready for finishing. Students will learn how to use a jeweler’s saw, hand files, abrasive paper and how to patina metal and use a rotary tumbler for polishing.

An introduction to using the relatively new medium known as Alcohol Inks. Instruction will include demonstrations of easy-to-follow techniques to create vibrant, beautiful and interesting works of art.  Ample time will be provided for students to experiment and create on their own. We will work on Yupo paper, Ampersand Clayboard, and ceramic tiles.  At the end of the workshop, students will have several pieces of original work to take home. **Bring a bag lunch and a drink.

Study the naturalistic and impressionistic techniques of painting first taught in turn of the century European studio schools and later brought to America by a select group of painters known as 'the Boston School' or American Impressionists. The techniques imparted are broad, direct, brilliant in color and immediate.  Students will learn about these methods and philosophies as applied to portrait painting working from the live model. Teaching will proceed through demonstration, discussion and one on one critiques.  Emphasis will be given to composition, doing a simple start, value unity, color relationships and an overview of American impressionism- with examples of its practitioners. This workshop will focus on oil painting techniques, but acrylic painting or mass drawing in charcoal can be accommodated. All skill levels are welcome.

Learn the basics of Silkscreen Printing including; how to make and prepare a screen, transfer an image, and make a print from start to finish. Learn to hand sew vintage quilt patterns to begin a pillow or a runner.  Grandmother’s Flower Garden is a vintage quilt pattern made up of hexagons, which are an ideal shape to learn hand piecing. To vary the pattern, they can subdivided, making interesting secondary designs. Other shapes that play well with hexies can be added to create a more modern look resulting in a medallion or millefiori pattern.  Instruction will include designing color plans on paper and ways to finish your project.

Learn to hand sew vintage quilt patterns to begin a pillow, runner or quilt.  Tumbling Blocks, (also known as Baby Blocks) is another classic geometric quilt pattern which consists of a simple 60 degree diamond. The magic begins when light, medium and dark fabrics are sewn together to create the illusion of a block. Differently colored fabrics will make star shapes, a pattern which is called Seven Sisters. Instruction will include designing color plans on paper and ways to finish your project

Learn floral imprinting and natural dyeing with NYC based textile artist Elizabeth Few to create a beautiful one of a kind silk piece while discussing the benefits of silk, both to our health and the environment.  The instructor will provide lots of flowers and other botanicals and participants can also bring their own to learn various results and techniques.  Included in the workshop price is a standard sized silk charmeuse pillowcase or scarf to make a Leizu creation. Participants will create a “botanical collage” on silk then prepare a bundle for steaming.  Final pieces can be picked up the following day at Elizabeth’s Art & Light Pop-Up event (16 Aiken St).

The Drawing Marathon is a two-day intensive workshop designed to immerse students in drawing.  The goal is to expand the definition of what it means to make a drawing beyond making an accurate black and white representation of a nameable motif.   Each day will start with a source or jumping off point, but participants will be encouraged to use the projects to tackle art-making questions that they find particularly interesting.  Participants will work on large drawings and be pushed to make changes and constantly adjust. The workshop is designed to be able to come and go as a participant chooses, taking breaks as needed, so come for as much or as little drawing time as you need.

Learn to draw the Portrait from observation of a live model in graphite. Emphasis will be placed on accuracy of Block-in.  It is in the understanding and practicing of the visual tools of blocking-in that students will develop their comparative measuring and shape-seeing abilities. Focusing on block-ins is a traditional academic training method that allows one to fine tune foundational skills for high accuracy and likeness.  Each student will get a chance to organize a strategic method of thought and process to develop a clear approach to drawing.  Beginner and experienced students are welcome.

This 2 day workshop is for artists working in watercolor or acrylic. You will learn ways to create a strong composition, use color to create atmosphere or add drama, develop texture, and represent nature in your own way. Various techniques for painting skies, trees, and other landscape elements will be explored.  A landscape may be anything from a panorama to an intimate nature study.  Artists may work on paper or canvas.  A list of recommendations will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own familiar brushes and paints. Participants should have some painting experience.

Gelli plate printing is a simple printmaking technique that requires water based paint, brayers, gelli plates, paper, and stencils.  In this workshop, participants will take gelli printing a step further by adding mixed media with drawing tools to enhance texture and details.   Instruction will include demonstration of various printmaking techniques that are possible using a gelli plate.

Learn practical applications for finding a new and fresh approach to painting that will extend your boundaries.  Workshop will include demonstrations and hands on painting with fluid acrylic paint on paper or canvas.  Students should bring painting supplies and one or more 11x14 inch canvases, prepared hardboards, or prepared wood panels.
